At the start of the series, we find Zeus, the god of the sky, lightning, and thunder, on Mount Olympus, where he reigns over the other gods and mortal humans. Early on, it becomes apparent that Zeus is becoming paranoid about a prophecy he’s received: “a line appears, the order wanes, the family falls, and kaos reigns.” His fear intensifies when he notices a vertical wrinkle on his forehead—what he believes to be the “line” mentioned in the prophecy. Zeus’s anxiety worsens after he dreams of cutting open a pomegranate, slicing his finger, and bleeding an unimaginable scenario, given that gods are not supposed to bleed. This incident leads him to believe that the “order” is indeed waning, as the prophecy foretold.

In a desperate attempt to understand his fate, Zeus visits The Fates, who are responsible for writing the prophecies. They inform him that a prophecy can only come true if people believe in it. In a bid to nullify his own prophecy, Zeus decides to destroy The Fates’ writings, believing this will eliminate all prophecies, including his own. For a moment, it appears that Caeneus is lost forever, as no one has ever returned from the Nothing. But Caeneus is different. He is special, as foretold by the prophecy written by The Fates, which has intertwined him with the unfolding events to ensure things happen as they should. As predicted, a crack appears in Caeneus’s stony form, and his soul returns to his body, restoring him to his normal self.

After his resurrection, Caeneus attempts to save his mother but struggles to find a way. When he touches his forehead to hers, he reflects on his entire life—every emotion, from love and hate to pain and joy. The power of his love and his intense desire to save his mother disrupts the divine order set by the gods. Her soul, which was being drawn into the Meander, stops and returns to her body, bringing her back to life. Before Caeneus can fully grasp what has happened, Hades appears, astonished by Caeneus’s ability to restore souls. This is precisely what Hades had been striving to achieve—to reform the Underworld for the better rather than merely enforcing Zeus’s harsh decrees.

Hades had been searching for a means to make amends with humanity, and with Caeneus’s unique ability, he finally sees a way to do so. It remains unclear how Caeneus managed to accomplish what even Hades could not, but it is evident that all the souls trapped in the Nothing will now be freed. Any lingering doubt is dispelled by the collapse of the Meander swirl in Zeus’s garden, which had been sustained by the souls from the Nothing. This marks the end of the cycle Zeus had perpetuated long ago.

Who Frees Prometheus?

The story of Kaos is narrated by Prometheus, who, despite being tied up on a mountain with an eagle perpetually pecking at his liver, seems relatively unfazed by his predicament because he senses that something significant is underway. Prometheus actively participates in manipulating events, including assisting the Fates in orchestrating the unfolding chaos.
